Previewing Previews for May 2018 Catalogue

Welcome to May Previews! There’s a lot of exciting stuff on the horizon. The last story in Action #1000 kicked off the beginning of Bendis’ tenure with Superman. After the Man of Steel Mini-Series, Bendis is also taking over for both the Action Comics and Superman titles. It’s also a new era for the Justice League after the Justice League No Justice Mini-Series, the story that sets up Justice League Dark, Justice League Odyssey and a relaunch of the main Justice League book. Catwoman is getting her own book again, this time by Joelle Jones!

Marvel’s got more big stuff in the works! The hot creative teams just keep coming. After Dan Slott’s lengthy run with the character, Spider-Man is getting relaunched with Nick Spencer AND Ryan Ottley fresh off concluding his run with Invincible. Captain America is getting a new #1 as well with Black Panther writer Ta-Nehisi Coates and Marvel fan-favorite Leinil Yu! Spinning out of the best-selling Thanos comic by Donny Cates comes the Coooooooossmmmmiiiiiiic Ghooooost Riiiidder in his own mini-series! And X-Men Grand Design returns to kick off Claremont Era.

Tons of new Indy series and trades! Lots of very interesting stuff and I’ll most likely check out the first issues of all of them. Flip through Beowulf when we have it in trade paperback because that artist is a beast. I’m also definitely picking up the Mike Mignola Dracula series. One of favorite artists adapting one of my favorite movies! If you picked up any of the Insight graphic novels we’ve had out on display recently like War of the Worlds, MKF, or Baker Street Four and enjoyed stuff from that publisher, be sure to check out their upcoming release of The Invisible Man. See you at the bottom…

The Adventure Zone GN

(W) Clint McElroy (A/CA) Carey Pietsch
Based on the McElroy family’s smash hit podcast, a graphic novel following the metafictional adventures of three D&D characters and their interfering Dungeon Master, with art from rising star Carey Pietsch. Harken to my tale. Once upon a time (a couple of years ago) there were these brothers who had a bunch of really successful podcasts, and they decided to do a new podcast with their dad, where they all played D&D together as a family, and lo, this new podcast was called The Adventure Zone, and verily did it get downloaded over 10 million times, and wow did it totally eat the brains of all who listened, because: It was just. That. Rad. And then did these guys team up with artist Carey Pietsch, and make a graphic novel where the weirdly sweet and brilliant but also super vulgar and honestly kind of bizarre story of The Adventure Zone got adapted into a goofy, innovative, and compelling graphic novel!

Beowulf TP

(W) Santiago García (A/CA) David Rubin
SANTIAGO GARCIA and DAVID RUBIN unite to bring forward the myth of Beowulf, which has endured for a thousand years and inspired an epic poem of the same name, became a foundational piece of English literature, and inspired generations of authors, from Tolkien to a good number of Hollywood screenwriters. BEOWULF tells of the tale of a Scandinavian hero in lands that would become what is now Denmark and Sweden: A monster, Grendel, has arrived in the kingdom of the Danes, devouring its men and women for 12 years until Beowulf arrives to save them. GARCIA and RUBIN faithfully follow the original story for a new version that is neither revisionist nor postmodern, but captures the tone and important details of the poem, translating its potent, epic resonance and melancholy into a contemporary comic that isn’t standard swords and sorcery or heroic fantasy fare, but rather an ancient story with a modern perspective that remains respectful of the source material.

Bratpack HC

(W/A/CA) Rick Veitch
Just as Moore’s Watchmen dissected the notion of superheroes, this underground classic deconstructs the implausible comic book mainstay that is the kid sidekick. Now, fifteen years after its last printing, it’s back in a new hardcover edition. Subversively subtle yet completely over the top, Brat Pack is uncompromising, uncomfortable, and
unforgettable. It’s also an essential for every graphic novel collection. This black and white hardcover edition includes Neil Gaiman’s introduction, as well as a new essay by Rick, extra art, and the original 23-page series proposal.
