Pulp Fiction Newsletter for Week of 12/2/15

Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. There are a lot of new series this week and a lot of interesting books in general. I did get a chance to read The Sheriff of Babylon and I thought it was pretty good. Harrow County gets its first collection this week and that’s a must-read for horror fans. Big Man Plans is out too if you have the constitution. If you’ve ever been interested in reading Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, the novel by Phillip K Dick that inspired Bladerunner, you may want to take a look at the comic omnibus. It’s unique among comic adaptations because it’s 100% unabridged making it literally the most detailed illustrated novel probably ever. Spider-Gwen gets her first trade, Rat Queens gets their first deluxe hardcover, Izombie gets an omnibus…lot going on. Marvel #1’s are still coming out and we’re still selling them at 1/2 off but this is the last month of the sale so now is the time to be adventurous!

Finally, we’ve posted another review by Eric Bryan on the site, this time of Derf Backderf’s new graphic novel Trashed. Check it out here.

See you at the bottom…

Jim Henson’s Storyteller: Dragons #1

(W) Daniel Bayliss, Fabian Rangel (A) Daniel Bayliss (CA) Daniel Bayliss, Cory Godbey
We explored the many different myths and legends about witches in Jim Henson’s The Storyteller: Witches, and we’re thrilled to rejoin the Storyteller and his faithful dog as they explore a whole new set of stories about dragons from talented creators with beautiful and unique styles. Dragons have taken many different shapes in cultures across the world, from serpents and “worms” to thunderbirds and the classic European firebreather. In this first issue, Fabian Rangel Jr. (Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard) and artist Daniel Bayliss (Translucid) bring us “Son of the Serpent,” inspired by Native American stories about the Horned Snake and the Thunderbird.

Kodoja #1

(W) Keith Foster (A) Rory Smith (CA) Elroy Jenkins
Three years ago, Special Weapons Division deactivated a highly advanced 200-foot tall superweapon called “Kodoja” because it was too powerful. The one surviving outpost, headed by chief designer, Jennifer Cruz, must stop the weapon they designed too be unstoppable.

A single clone could be helpful; unfortunately the replication process doesn’t go as planned! Written by Eisner-award winning author Paul Jenkins (Wolverine: Origin, The Incredible Hulk, Spider-Man) and art superstar Andy Clarke (Batman, Judge Dredd), this monthly series promises to be fun, daring, adventurous and most times, quite offensive.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep Omnibus TP

(W) Philip K. Dick (A) Tony Parker (CA) Jay Shaw
If you loved the 1982 Ridley Scott film Blade Runner, chances are you know it’s based on Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? From 2009-2011, we published a 24-issue graphic interpretation of the novel as realized by artist Tony Parker. Now, for the first time, all 24 issues of the Eisner Award-nominated series are collected into one complete omnibus edition, featuring a brand-new cover by Mondo artist Jay Shaw and essays from Jonathan Lethem, Ed Brubaker, Warren Ellis, Matt Fraction, and more. San Francisco lies under a cloud of radioactive dust. The World War has killed millions, driving entire species to extinction and sending mankind off-planet. Those who remain covet any living creature, and for people who can’t afford one, companies build incredibly realistic fakes: horses, birds, cats, sheep…even humans. Rick Deckard is an officially sanctioned bounty hunter tasked to find six rogue androids. They’re machines, but look, sound, and think like humans-and infinitely more dangerous.

Grant Morrison’s 18 Days TP Vol 1 War Begins
(W) Grant Morrison & Various (A) Jeevan Kang, Francesco Biagini (CA) Mukesh Singh
From legendary creator Grant Morrison (All-Star Superman, Batman & Robin, The Invisibles) comes the first chapter in his newest creation. 18 Days is the story of three generations of super-warriors, meeting for the final battle of their age, a climactic war that concludes the age of the gods and begins the age of man. Collecting the first story arc from the series. “This is not a Lord of the Rings or a Star Wars where the good guys win because they are right. The good guys in 18 Days are forced to cheat and lie and break rules to win. Although it has fantastic, mythic trappings, this is a very modern story of realpolitik and the failure of ideals in the face of harsh truth.” – Grant Morrison
