Pulp Fiction Newsletter Week of 1/10/17

Hello everyone. Can’t lie. It’s a pretty light week, but there are some bright spots like Tom King’s critically acclaimed Vision series collected all in one nice hardcover. This is also everyone’s last chance to sign up for Jim Higgins’ art class at Culver City. I caught up on Redneck this week and confirm that it’s pretty damn good. Reminds me of the criminally underappreciated white trash vampire movie, Near Dark. Also No 1 With a Bullet is only three issues in and proving to be a clever, provocative thriller. Ok that’s it from me. See you at the bottom…

Making Comics Class with Jim Higgins

Making Comics is a 12-session class that focuses on the fundamental skills of creating comics. The class is for both writers and artists. In it, writers and cartoonists learn the essential knowledge needed to write a story with interesting characters, an engaging plot, and a satisfying ending. The artists will be given drawing tips, instruction about technique to help with visual storytelling, composition, light and dark, figure work, and other drawing skills. Writers will be given example of the best formats for comics scripts, examples of pro scripts, and info on how to find and work with artists. The goal for the artists is to have a finished 8 to 10-page mini-comic that is a complete, self-contained story at the end of the classes. The goal for writers is to have a completed script for a self-contained, 14 to 15-page short comics story.

PS You may be forced to read some great comics for homework.

It runs for 12 Saturdays from 12 to 3pm starting on January 6th. The class costs $350.  GIVE THE CLASS AS A GIFT! Come in to Pulp Fiction, pay for the class, and send the name and email address of the recipient to Jim at the email address below. To sign up, e-mail Jim, the instructor, at Jim@newsuit.net or just show up on December 16!

The class is taught by Jim Higgins who has been teaching comics writing and drawing classes at places like CalArts, the School of Visual Arts, Otis College of Art and Design, and many other fine institutions. Jim is a former DC Comics editor and works as a freelance writer and comics editor.
