Pulp Fiction Newsletter Week of 3/16/16

Hello everyone. We have a have a pretty massive week, especially when it comes to graphic novels. There are a few new series this week also, including a new Iron Man title and a new DC anthology style book sharing the title of a new TV show, but seemingly not related to it?

Ok let’s get to the trade side. I would assume the most popular release this week is going to be the collection of Marvel’s recent Secret Wars series. Speaking as a reader that’s not huge into the Marvel universe, I have to say I really enjoyed this book. It was beautifully drawn by Esad Ribic and operates on a fairly self-contained level or as a conclusion to Hickman’s Fantastic Four run. It took forever to come out, but I think they have a nice tidy package here that will continue selling on a perennial level.  Marvel is also releasing the second omnibus of Stan Lee’s Captain America run.

On the DC side, we have the next hardcover and paperback collections of the current ongoing Batman run and the second Gotham Academy trade. We’re also getting the first trade of the new Archie series by Mark Waid and Fiona Staples, a hardcover collection of Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham’s Nameless series from Image, and the first deluxe hardcover for Nailbiter as well. Lots of books!

See you at the bottom…

Hit TP Vol 2 1957

(W) Bryce Carlson (A/CA) Vanesa R. Del
Hit: 1955 was one of our favorite original series of 2013, a dark, violent dive into the depths of 1950s corruption in Los Angeles featuring the writing of Bryce Carlson and the debut of Russ Manning Award for Most Promising Newcomer nominee Vanesa R. Del Rey. Hit: 1957 takes us later in the seminal decade of change for the LAPD-familiar faces, new threats, and more sharp, smart noir. Even if you missed out on the first series, if you’re a fan of crime comics like Parker, Criminal, and Tumor, Hit is in your wheelhouse. Crime is down in Los Angeles-at least, on the surface. Mickey Cohen has been quiet since his release from prison and the LAPD has seemingly regained control of the city. But the underground is a different story. Det. Harvey Slater and company have spent the last two years focused on Domino and his Syndicate’s unrelenting infiltration, but no matter how many people the hit squad kills, the real fight for Los Angeles rages on. Meanwhile, Slater’s being hounded by Internal Affairs, Bonnie Brae is missing, and everything is falling apart at the seams. Collects the complete mini-series, issues #1-4.
