Pulp Fiction Newsletter Week of 5/13

Hey everyone! It’s small week for new releases, but what little there is very exciting! First off, we’re continuing our sale on Marvel’s Secret Wars event this month with the second

issue.  We also have a deal of the week triple-header on some new indy books that all look very promising. The book I expect we’ll sell the most of this week is Injection #1, by Warren Ellis, Delcan Salvey, and Jordie Bellaire. Any new Warren Ellis is cause for excitement, but this is also the same creative team that previously worked on that critically acclaimed Moon Knight book from last year. Next up is Harrow County #1 by Cullen Bun and Tyler Crook. I got caught up on the last few years of BPRD stuff a few weekends ago, and I was really impressed with Tyler Crook’s artwork. He has kind of a Jeff Smith thing going on that gives his characters a lot of expression, but he also knows how to bring the monsters! Lastly is a steam-punk comic from Paul Jenkins, Matthew Daley and Carlos Magno called Lantern City #1. I’m not into steampunk like a lot of other folks are, but Carlos Magno is awesome. He did a great job drawing the Planet of the Apes books for Boom and is an artist that should be on everyone’s radar. On the trade side, we have the first collection of stories featuring the mysterious Lady Thor, the next installment following Prometheus in the Fire and Stone series, and a collection of some cool early Walter Simonson stuff. See you at the bottom.

Walter Simonson’s Star Slammers HC

(W/A/CA) Walter Simonson
Before Walter Simonson’s work with Marvel and DC, there was Star Slammers, a series first devised by Simonson during his college days. The Slammers would later be resurrected as a Marvel graphic novel, and then a miniseries. Simonson describes it thus: “Once upon a time, there was a race of men who could out-shoot, out-fight, and out-kill anybody. They were paid fabulous sums to act as mercenaries. The practice became so lucrative, they decided to go into business. They became the most successful businessmen in history, and they called themselves…The Star Slammers!” The collected Star Slammers also features, published here for the very first time, Simonson’s earliest version of the Slammers created for his college thesis at the Rhode Island School of Design. These stories predate his first professional comics work but strongly show the artist’s keen sense of composition and design.
