Pulp Fiction Newsletter Week of 5/23/18

Hello everyone! There’s not much in the way of new series this week. Even Black Panther #1 still has the same writer, so if you’ve been reading Coates’ run this whole time keep it up and if you’re looking for a jump on point then this is it. What we do have this week is a lot of follow up issues. Both Justice League No Justice and Barrier are weekly so if you’re enjoying those books and want to stay caught up, there is a new issue every week until they’re finished. Flash #47 is the first part of the anticipated Flash War story arc and Invincible Iron Man #600 is Brian Michael Bendis’ last Marvel book for the foreseeable future.

We have tons of super cheap Trading Post graphic novels on sale right now. We did a big purge and ended up with lots of stuff priced $1 – $3!! Back when I was younger and had less money, but more time I loved the trade-in section. I definitely tried out and discovered things I would not have tried otherwise. Go find your own diamonds in the rough!

Lastly, longtime Pulp Fiction friend Gwendolyn Dreyer (Monster Elementary) has directed a stage play called Eyes of the Blind! I don’t think my description can do it justice, so here’s some copy straight from the director:

Christianity devours women. Called home after the sudden suicide of her sister, Amy Bhaer finds herself back on the remote Naval base she lived as a child. Her visit is short; only a week to help her father, Kenneth, pack away his youngest’s life. Amy can endure anything for a week. Even Dad. Unable to cope with the guilt of a sister she barely knew, lost, Amy does not trust what she begins to see: her dead sister, Cassie. Apparitions increasingly sinister, Amy must face down decades of repressed familial insecurities to find truth in her family’s tragedy.

The show does play with religious imagery, but is written by a non-denominational christian and directed by a Catholic (me). It is not a condemnation of religion on the whole. However, if religious imagery and critique of aspects of christianity will upset you, this is not the show for you. 🙂

It is firmly PG-13 and probably the most exciting project I’ve ever directed. The actors have quite the pedigrees, including one actor playing an apparition with a ridiculous amount of contortion and pantomime training. I creep myself out in rehearsals due to how on point he is after I ask to see a certain movement. Check out the cast bios on the website if you want to see the caliber of performers we have on the team. www.john1021.com

Fun fact! The Producer, Playwright, Director, and Technical Director are ALL women, which almost never happens in theater, let alone a HORROR production of any kind. And the lead role is a woman who doesn’t leave the stage for 70 minutes. This is an opportunity to see horror done by all women. That opportunity doesn’t come along often.

If you would like to come see my show, I would suggest buying tickets now as there are only three performances and there are 45 seats per performance. www.hollywoodfringe.org/projects/5171

Thank you for your support. Even if it’s just reading this. 🙂 I hope to see some of you there.

Cool! Congratulations Gwendolyn! -R
