Pulp Fiction Newsletter Week of 7/4/18

Hello everyone! We ARE going to be open this 4th of July and we WILL have all the new releases for the week. We are going to close an hour early and catch some fireworks.

4th of July Hours 11am to 7pm

Artist Russ Heath has just moved to an assisted living facility in Long Beach. Jim McLauchlin of HeroInitiative.org is looking for occasional helpers (maybe once a month) to take Mr Heath to doctor appointments. Gas, lunch, etc will be gladly paid for. Russ is a pretty cool guy with a lot of AMAZING stories, so it’s usually a pretty cool experience for the helpers as well. If you’re interested in lending a hand, please email Mr McLauchlin at Jim@heroinitiative.org.

Mr Higgins continues to expand his catalog of comic classroom curriculum beginning this July with writing Horror comics! Want to get trained up before Halloween? Read below for more details.

Writing Horror Comics w/ Jim Higgins
July 7th, July 14th, July 28th, and Aug 4th at the Culver store
People have been telling scary stories for thousands of years. Some are cautionary tales, like Hansel and Gretel, some are monster stories, like Godzilla, some are apocalyptic, like The Walking Dead, and on and on. Many people find something viscerally attractive to the idea of being scared. There’s a feeling of having pushed their way past some real danger and a satisfaction that they survived. Horror tales bring us on a journey with people, often ordinary people just like us, who must fight a terror-inspiring foe in life or death situations. Perhaps it’s those real world characters and scenarios that have made the horror story such and enduring type of narrative.

In this seven-session online class, we’ll analyze various comics (and some films) in order to understand some of the tropes, methods, and techniques used to make great horror stories as well as the reasons behind our desire to be scared. We’ll look at different psychological issues and delve into the deeper aspects of the unconscious mind that inform these stories. We’ll discuss recurring themes that appear and resonate.  And we’ll look at some of the metaphors that these stories deal in and how they relate to our lives.

Students taking the class will learn how to craft a great horror story using these themes and elements. Everyone will work toward finishing a scene-by-scene outline for their story, which can be short or longform. The class will meet live in an online platform TBA and will be recorded so that students can re-listen to it later or can listen for the first time if they can’t be in the class live.
When: Tuesday, July 24 to Tuesday September 4.

Time: 5:00pm to 8:00pm Pacific Time.

Cost: $275.00.
