Making Comics with Jim Higgins
Making Comics is a 12-session class that focuses on the fundamental skills of creating comics. The class is for both writers and artists. In it, you’ll learn the most important aspect of writing — how to structure a story as it relates to the medium of comics and graphic novels. Cartoonists will often take art classes to improve their drawing, but not enough take the time to hone their skills as writers. In this workshop, writers and cartoonists learn the essential knowledge needed to write a story with interesting characters, an engaging plot, and a satisfying ending. The artists will be given drawing tips, instruction about technique, and examples of work by great masters, new and old, to help with visual storytelling, composition, light and dark, figure work, and other drawing skills. Writers will be given example of the best formats for comics scripts, examples of pro scripts, and info on how to find and work with artists.
The goal for the artists is to have a finished 8 to 10-page mini-comic that is a complete, self-contained story at the end of the classes. The goal for writers is to have a completed script for a self-contained, 14 to 15-page short comics story.
12 Saturdays, September 22 to December 15 (no class on November 24)
To sign up, e-mail Jim Higgins at firstname.lastname@example.org or just show up on the 21st!
The Art of Inking – A Workshop For Comics Artists and Illustrators
Drawing is an essential skill for many types of art, especially comics. For many artists and illustrators, getting all the work done in pencil is only part of the process. To print it, they want it to look solid and be in some kind of final form. The way that’s been accomplished throughout history is to go over it with some kind of ink. Or as it’s usually said, to ink it.
In this one-day workshop, you’ll learn various different techniques to ink either your artwork or the work of others. You’ll learn how to use various types of brushes and India ink, dip pens with different types of nibs, and an array of disposable pens and brush pens that can often mimic the effects done with those other traditional tools, but with less mess and less maintenance. The art of inking is not something taught very often, even in art schools. But you’ll learn the ropes here.
Supplies to get:
A #2 watercolor brush
A bottle of Speedball waterproof black ink
2 disposable black ink pens of any size by brands like Prismacolor, Copic Fineliner (not the fat, broad-tip, alcohol-based ones), Faber-Castell, or Micron. If you have any brush pens, bring those (though it’s not necessary that you buy one)
A set of dip ink pens. Most art supply stores have ones that have a large and small pen and multiple nibs. Below is an example I’ve seen around.
